Public Benefits Coordinator
Sarah Vaughner is a Public Benefits Coordinator at The Michels Law Firm. With experience working with experts in the field, caring for aged and disabled people, and studying the policies that cater to elderly and disabled Texans, Sarah is no stranger to the caregiver/patient and caseworker/client dynamics. Sarah is responsible for facilitating the Medicaid application process and helping families navigate the many twists and turns encountered therein.
As native Houstonian, Sarah has spent many years working with the disabled and aged community in Harris County and the surrounding areas.
After receiving her Victim Studies degree from Sam Houston State University, Sarah worked with Goodwill Industries Houston as the Community Service and Volunteer Coordinator.
Later, Sarah began working for Texas Health and Human Services Commission as a Medicaid Eligibility Specialist for Medicaid for the Elderly and People with Disabilities. She served the state for five years before beginning a contract with Houston Methodist Hospital through the Outstation Worker Program as an eligibility specialist for Hospital-Based Medicaid programs. It was there that Sarah worked closely with Long-Term Care Medicaid specialists to gain extensive knowledge in HHSC Policy.
Sarah then made the move to Harris County Protective Services for Children and Adults where she worked as a Guardian Case Manager for Harris County Guardianship Program. Sarah oversaw and organized the medical care, Medicaid applications, daily needs, housing, property, and sometimes funerals for a caseload of 30 wards for Harris County Probate Court 1.
In August 2019, Sarah joined the Medicaid team at The Michels Law Firm. With her, the firm gained expertise in how Medicaid directly correlates with other Long-Term Care needs.
